Manchester United and Chelsea fans must be squirming with nervous excitement in anticipation of tonight’s Champions League final, a final that we (Liverpool!) should have been in, instead of Chelsea. It was our destiny! Yes, I’m still sore at having lost the semi-finals to them. And I would have completely forgotten about tonight’s final had my friend not asked me on WLM who I thought would win the final.
My response to him was that it was like choosing between a vampire and a warewolf to execute a most painful death upon me.
That would be what it would feel like if I were to watch two of my most hated teams in the final of my most beloved football competition. As much as the Premier League is Liverpool’s bread and butter, the Champions League (and the former European Cup) will always have a special place in my heart.
Therefore I choose not to watch the final tonight.
But if my life depended on it and I had to make a choice, I’d probably choose Man U over Chelsea to win the trophy. Even though they’re our mortal enemies, I’d have to give Man U credit for the way they’ve played in the Premiership this season and kudos to them for a deserved title. It would be the icing on the Red Devil’s cake for them to win tonight.
And it’ll be more salt in my wounds, but it won’t be as painful if Chelsea were to win it.
So for tonight, even though my eyes are locked firmly away from the telly (in deep slumber, most likely!), I’d be (minutely) rooting for the Mancs. The thought of Roman Abramovich gleefully seeing the team (and trophy) that he bought winning in his hometown is just too much for me to bear.
Even though I’d sometimes wish Christiano Ronaldo would do one step-over too many, entangle his legs and squash his mini-balls to a pulp, just for tonight, I’m hoping he’d dazzle Chelsea with his skills and score.
In the 6th minute.
Of added time.
In the 2nd period of extra-time.
With Alex Fur’git’son’s luck, 6 minutes of added time wouldn’t be too far fetched.
*swallows pride* Go Mancs!!
