One Month

Has it been a month already?? Time does fly doesn’t it? It was a month ago, in a flurry of activity and the panic of delivery before the nurses were even ready, our little princess was born.

Maya And Osman, The Octopus 1/2

We’ve had to dive straight into the deep end when Maya came into our lives. Three kids, a full-time job and no maid is no easy task, but we managed to somehow keep our heads above water and survived the ordeal that is the first month of a newborn’s life. Lack of sleep, lack of energy and lack of sanity sometimes invaded our already busy schedule. Thankfully Maya cooperated and other than a couple of sleepless nights, she has been the near-perfect angel that all parents would want out of their babies.

She’s still being breastfed up to this day and we’re hoping that it will continue in this, her second month of life. Exciting changes are in store during this period, as with most babies her age - she’s more aware of her surroundings, even offering a smile and a coo on occasions. I’m planning to start her off on her tummy time this month. Must get those neck muscles strengthened!

The boys have been very good to their sister so far. Whenever she cries, it’s nice to see them running to her cot to check on her, even though it’s merely a peep inside her cot or a poke if they can reach her through the cot railings. I guess they’re still more interested in their toys and the TV (when they’re not fighting with each other) than be aware of their sister and interacting with her more (perhaps in the future).

Having three kids under the age of four can be stressful for anyone, and it will get even more stressful once Ajab starts school next month. All that travelling, sending, fetching, rushing to work, picking the kids up from work, having dinner late in the evening, the tiredness …. it all adds up.

Speaking of Ajab, he has been quite cooperative so far, but occasionally, he would rear his ugly head and make too much noise when he plays while his sister is asleep (such a relief when she does sleep!) or something would upset him and he’d be screaming or throwing things about.

Travelling with three kids is another challenge we’ve had to get used to, especially when it comes to grocery shopping with the three of them. Usually I’d be carrying Ayeed and Ajab would walk beside us with Trin carrying Maya and pushing the stroller / shopping cart. We’ve had to adjust little things like who gets in the cab first, how we’re gonna carry each kid, who sits where, etc. I think that’s the key to our success so far - adjustment and flexibility. And it’s not just travelling. Many aspects of our life had to be adjusted to accommodate the extra person in our household, ranging from sleeping to dining and of course the division of labour when it comes to housework.

I wouldn’t say we’re a well-oiled machine but we’ve been chugging along just fine with, firstly one, then two, and now three kids. The tracks haven’t always been in a straight line and the going hasn’t always been smooth. We’ve had to change lines a few times, but we’re still on course to reach our destination, whatever that may be.

(Yes, I’m using the train analogy thanks to one too many episodes of Thomas and Friends)

What’s in store for us in the coming month? We’re hoping for more sleep, that’s for sure! Maya’s still waking up two or three times a night. We’re hoping her sleep pattern will be more or less stable in the coming months. We need the sleep!

So happy one month, Maya. No cakes or what not. You’ll get your treat soon (when you have teeth!).
